Mightier | Psalm 93

“Mightier than the thunders of many waters, Mightier than the waves of the sea,
The LORD on high is mighty!” Psalm 93:4

Yesterday afternoon I made not one, but two runs to the Lowe’s here in town.

I’ve been determined on finishing my massive outdoor project of laying a bed of stone under my deck and doubling the expanse of my garden that runs along the perimeter of it. And yesterday was my day off, in which I purposed to finish it. I knew the project would take some time, but it’s been a gradual development that has lasted about three weeks, now.

If you stepped outside yesterday, I’m sure you also experienced our hottest day of 2021 yet, here in Culpeper. My watch said that the temperature was 92 degrees, and yet I was dead-set on finishing.

Three hours went by, and I was nearly finished. I had to make one last trip to the department store, when seemingly out of nowhere a massive rain fall came down. Thunder cracked above me! The ground all around was about to get soaking wet. And I had no choice but to throw in the towel for the day.

But it was a transcendental moment! In an instant, I was reminded of my minuscule humanity and the Lord God’s magnitude. What a fresh reminder that my work, my volition, and my ability were all ceased in an instant, without any pushback. The God of highest heaven is most certainly greater than all these things.

And praise him for his magnitude! For we do not serve a God who can be swayed, moved, or thwarted, but one who is almighty and powerful and yet good and compassionate and kind toward us.

May we as a church, the family of God at Christ Covenant, always have eyes that are turned toward heaven. For as Psalm 93:1–2 tell us:

“The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty; The LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.”

Be blessed in Christ’s name, Church!
