On Allies and Confidants

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” Proverbs 17:17

One thing I’ve been growing in appreciation of the past several weeks is the depth of this twofold truth above.

It’s in times of adversity, when “the going gets tough,” that both our Alliances and our Confidants are on full display. Allies are those with whom we have a shared interest, a common bond, and perhaps even a kindred spirit. But Confidants are people for whom we would sacrifice our own livelihoods, our welfare, and our reputations, all for their good—AND they would do the same, if and when given the opportunity.

An ally is for something; a confidant is for someone.

The marvel of the Christian religion in regard to our relationships, is that it makes otherwise unassociated members allies and confidants by its very nature. We believers are for not only the kingdom of Christ, but for Christ. And the glory of human relationships that echo this is in how we faithfully love not only our King, but our fellow sisters and brothers.

Our culture’s response to the coming and going of C-19 is indicative of these relationships. While we can’t reasonably be all things to all people (nor should we), we do have responsibility unto our brothers and our friends alike. As believers, we have a continued mission to maintain the peace and purity of the Church, speaking truth in love for the good of Christ’s people and the welfare of the world.

As I write this, so many of my own dearest friends and family members have come to mind. Confidants who have stood faithful through thick and thin, allies who have proved reliable, precious saints who know the love of God in Christ and for love’s sake are rising to the occasion.
